Matti Nelimarkka

Bio

Matti Nelimarkka examines the intersections of politics, democracy, and human–computer interaction, with particular attention to social media and politics, design as a form of political action, and the societal impacts of algorithmic systems or AI. He leads the Helsinki Social Computing research group.

His expertise in social data science and computational methods bridges advanced technical approaches with social science research. He places particular emphasis on the interplay between social theory and its practical implementation through computational workflows, as well as on questions of validity and reliability in these emerging methods.

His multidisciplinary background is reflected in his affiliations: Dr. Nelimarkka holds a PhD in Computer Science and MSocSc in Political Science from the University of Helsinki and the title of docent in Media Studies (Tampere University) and Computer Science (University of Helsinki). He is a university lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki, and a visiting scholar at the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University.
